Day 77: Denham to Kalbarri

"RABBITS" - the first of the month and also a new financial year.

Today we drove to Kalbarri. We had two stops along the way - one at Shell Beach which is in the Shark Bay National Park. The beach is up to 7 metres thick with tiny shells. Although it is in the national park, a company has a licence to mine a certain amount of the shells each year which is sold as shell grit in the poultry industry.

The number of shells continues to grow each year due to the salty nature of the sea in that area - it is too salty for most of the shell mollusc predators.

We also stopped at Billabong Roadhouse where we had morning tea. The weather was cool - the temp didn't get above 20 all day so I suppose you could say we are now in winter at last - not yet as cold as Gatton however.

We arrived at Kalbarri around 1:30pm. It is a beautiful seaside town on the Murcheson River inlet. Kalbarri is also surrounded by national parks. Along the coastline near the town are a variety of lookouts which we will be investigating tomorrow. This afternoon, we did our grocery shopping and then took some photos of the river.
