Days 90-92: Perth

On THURSDAY, Day 90, we did a bit of shopping and maintenance on the van. Other than that, a quiet day.

FRIDAY, Day 91 - we had a good day today, despite the bad weather. We drove the 30km to Fremantle in the rain and the maximum temp today was 18 degrees.

On arrival we visited the WA Maritime Museum which was good - Doug & Sue went on an additional
tour as part of that museum - through an Oberon Class submarine. I didn't bother as I went on a tour through one at Darling Harbour a few years ago whilst in Sydney.
It was good to see 'Australia 11' which won the America's Cup in the early 80s.

We then visited the WA Shipwreck Museum - we enjoyed this even more than the Maritime Museum.
Ever since we arrived in WA we have been reading about shipwrecks and visiting small museums down the west coast with information about shipwrecks - there have been over 1700 shipwrecks in WA since Dirk Hartog landed in 1616.

The most interesting display at this museum was the remains of the Dutch ship, Batavia, wrecked at Houtman  Abrolhos on it's maiden voyage in 1629. They should make a movie about it - mutiny, murder, etc..........  There is currently a best selling book about it by Peter Fitzsimons called, duuuh.... 'Batavia'.
PS - Batavia is also the old (Dutch) name for Jarkarta, capital of Indonesia.

We then went and had lunch at Cicerellos at the fishing boat harbour - great pink snapper meal!

After that it was off to the Fremantle markets for 90 minutes or so, then a drink at the Esplanade Hotel - absolutely huge hotel taking up the whole block.

We then had a drive to South Beach but the weather was cra#$%^p so we headed home. We were tired but it had been a good day.

Tomorrow afternoon, we go to see WICKED at Burswood and we'll probably stay there for dinner.

SATURDAY, Day 92 - WICKED was great - we also lost at the Casino but it was a great day.

  1. Perth looks great, thanks for sharing. It has been mighty cold over here and for the Gatton Show very very cold, overcast and some rain.
