Days 82 - 84 Geraldton

On WEDNESDAY, DAY 82, we didn't do anything touristy. We went shopping, Bunnings, etc. and limbered up for the State of Origin........

On THURSDAY, DAY 83, we visited the HMAS Sydney memorial on a hill overlooking Geraldton and had a free tour. Ther HMAS Sydney went down off the WA coast in 1940 sung by the German ship Kormorant. The Sydney lost all 645 hands. The Kormorant lost approximately 80 of 380 crew.  Both vessels were located alomost 3km underwater in 2008  - it was quite interesting.

After that we visited the Tourist Information Centre plus the old Geraldton Gaol which was used until 1984 and is now an Art & Craft centre.

We also had lunch at 'Barnacles' on Fisherman's wharf and looked at some of the boats moored there.

The weather here has been cold - 6 to 17 degrees - very unseasonal apparently. Usually it gets up to the low 20s.

On FRIDAY, DAY 84, we visited the Brolhos Crayfish Co-operative where we went on a tour of the factory. The co-op caters for all the local crayfish boats, many of whom live for half the year on the islands on Houtman's Abrolhos (remember from primary school geography) catching crayfish (lobster). These lobster are exported live all round the world packed in sawdust.

We were not given any samples but we did buy a couple for dinner which we steamed in salt water, butter and garlic. They were very nice!

After that, we visited Jean Edwards, a friend of Lorelle's parents who has lived in Geralton for over 40 years. She lives in a beautiful house overlooking one of the best beaches in Geraldton.

Geraldton has some beautiful beaches and Lorelle and I were both impressed with how cyrstal clear the water is around Geraldton, despite it being a city with quite a bit of industrialism.

We then drove 28 km south of Geraldton to the historic town of Greenough where we had lunch, did a tour of the historic buildings and bought some souvenirs.

We then returned to the van, had a happy hour and cooked our crayfish.

Tomorrow we head south towards Perth. We will be visiting Dongara, Jurien Bay, Cervantes, the Pinnacles, etc. We don't know where we will be stopping yet.

We plan on arriving in Perth on Sunday.
