Day 108: Border Village to Ceduna

Well, we made it across the Nullarbor - 1300km from Norseman in WA to Ceduna in SA. The trip took three full days and today was the best of the three - today there was some great scenery at the Bunda Cliffs on the coast between Eucla and the township (fuel stop) of Nullarbor.

Nullabor was in the Nullarbor National Park where we drove through some areas which had no trees at all.

Nullarbor also had the distinction of having the most expensive fuel so far in our trip around Oz - 199.9c.

However, the biggest highlight of the day was when we called in to HEAD OF BIGHT, on the coast about 26km from Nullarbor. Here, you pay $10 to walk down to some observation points which are visited between May & October by southern right whales and their calves.  It is incredible - today their were 65 whales counted - many of them within 100 metres of the coastline and the observation points. Apparently the whales have always visited this area - who knows whether the pristine, sheltered conditions favour them or it is just 'whale memory' but they return every year......  We could have stayed all day but we wanted to get to Ceduna and the flies were bad.....

There were no other animals seen on our crossing other than heaps of skinks and today we saw a dead wombat.

Just before we entered Ceduna, we had to pull up at the entrance to the town (all traffic is stopped) and an inspector checks that you have no fruit & veges - they actually have a look in your van) - Ceduna is the start of the SA quarantine area - they don't want pests from other states affecting their fruit & veges.

It was nice getting back into civilisation today - Ceduna is a pretty town and while I was on my way to the supermarket to buy fresh fruit & veges at about 6:15pm tonight, I had to stop near the jetty and take some piccies - it was really nice at dusk - hence the jetty photos.

Tomorrow is Lorelle's 21st birthday so I'll be busy cooking breakfast, doing the washing, etc.
