Day 111: Streaky Bay to Port Lincoln

It was a cold morning - maximum temp today was 17 degrees and I think we are in for a few weeks of cold weather. Today we continued south.   39km south of Streaky Bay we stopped at "Murphy's Haystacks" - granite pillars and boulders in a farmer's (Murphy) paddock - eroded by wind and estimated to be 1500 million years old.

We then continued on to have morning tea at the small town of Elliston before heading into Coffin Bay for lunch.

Coffin Bay is a very small place and is rumoured to have the best oysters in South Australia. On driving around the Esplanade we could however not find any places or boats selling oysters. I got on to the CB radio to Doug and mentioned the lack of outlets when one of the locals overheard our conversation and directed us up the hill past the general store - here we found all the oyster farmers buildings. We went into one and they were $7.50/dozen in their closed shells or $11 if they were opened and loosened off the shells - we went for the latter as we valued our fingers too much. The owner did them on the spot in front of us and we soon had a dozen oysters each which we ate at the boat ramp area.

We then continued on the extra 30km to Port Lincoln and set up in a van park overlooking the harbour - this harbour is four times the size of Sydney Harbour and they say that Port Lincoln would have been South Australia's capital but for its lack of a big enough fresh water supply.
