Day 118: Wilpena Pound

We had an excellent day today. Although it was very cloudy, this did not dampen our spirits, figuratively or literally.  We set off at 9:30am with our thermos and lunch to explore some of the gorges and lookouts around the central Flinders Ranges.

We were not disappointed - the scenery here is spectacular. This year has been one of the wetest on record and as a result there is a lot of greenery in the photographs.

We did a big loop drive and visited Bunyeroo Gorge, Brachina Gorge, the Aroona Ruins and a number of other places. The scenery is great.  The Flinders Ranges are fantastic if you are into hiking - there are trails everywhere for every type of walker.  For the experienced with a lot of time you can do the Heysen Trail (http://www.heysentrail.asn.au/)  named after Hans Heysen, a Dutch artist who walked the Flinders Ranges and other parts of SA in the first half of the 1900s. This walking trail is 1200km long and has huts placed in strategic places along the route.
A similar walk exists in WA called the Bibbulmun Track.

The Flinders Ranges has been a highlight of our trip around Oz. It has been a beautiful sport in the mountains with the added benefit of having water and electricity laid on - unbelievable.....  The temperatures have been OK - minimums around 6 degrees and maximums around 15 degrees.

Tomorrow we leave for Adelaide. We should get there some time after lunch tomorrow (Friday).
