Day 121: Adelaide

Today we set off at 9:30am. First we visited Mt Lofty, the lookout over Adelaide where the TV station broadcating antennas are located - very similar to Brisbane's Mt Cootha. It was a beautiful morning but unfortunately it was a bit hazy for the photographs.

Next we drove into the Adelaide Hills, which are only 20-30km from Adelaide. There are lots of places to stop at and things to see but we went to Hahndorf which is the biggest attracttion in the area - it is a German settled village with many of the original buildings still being used and is a treasure trove of art and craft shops, wine & cheese tasting, chocolates, sweets, German hotels and authentic German food, etc. The  main street is about a kilometre long, so you could easily spend a whole day there.  We had lunch in the German Arms Hotel - our meals were huge so we have had no dinner tonight. Typical German food - sauerkraut, several types of sausage, pork ribs, schnitzel, potatoes, etc.... and all this washed down with a German beer.

After Hahndorf, we went on the Onkaparinga Scenic Drive. The Onkaparinga factory (blanket making, etc.) closed in 1997 but we drove past the closed factory. Along the way we stopped at the Melba Chocolate Factory, a Cheese tasting store and the Toy Factory at Gumeracha which is marked by a giant rocking horse - they also had a mini-farm attached and I went in to have a look at the alpacas which are very common in SA. They are an interesting animal, (I think part of thre camel family). I don't know if I'd like to shear them as they can bite!

After that we were stuffed, so we drove home down a picturesque drive with lots of bends and felt like we'd had a pretty good day.
